Mesopotamia, first millennium BCE. Enūma Anu Enlil is a series of celestial omens copied in cuneiform. This tablet, K.160, is a Neo-Assyrian copy from Nineveh of tablet 63, the Venus tablet of Ammi-ṣaduqa. A sighting is recorded. Then an apodosis: the “then” of the omen, what the night was taken to mean for the land. Observation is not divination even when they occupy one surface.

If on the 15th of Šabāṭu Venus disappeared in the west, remaining absent in the sky three days, and on the 18th of Šabāṭu Venus appeared in the east: rains in the land; desolation.
